GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Human trafficking has been a growing industry in Michigan, a state senator reports on Thursday.
"Domestic human trafficking in America is the second fastest growing industry next to the drug trade and its very lucrative," reports State Sen. Judy Emmons. "That's why we are seeing an increase and seeing folks right next door being involved that people are unaware of."
Emmons spoke at a symposium on human trafficking hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids. She says the international border along Michigan's state lines could add to the problem.
Rebecca Mastee, a member of the Michigan Catholic Conference, and Theresa Flores, an author and survivor of the sex trade also spoke at the conference.
