BMW with stolen tires and wheels at Draeger Motor Sales, Spring Lake, Mich.
SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Owner Larry Draeger says the tires and wheels stolen from vehicles on display at Draeger Motor Sales are worth thousands of dollars.
"I don't know if they have people waiting for those wheels and tires, but they targeted specific vehicles," he explains. "BMW's were their number one choice."
Draeger says the burglars removed the tires and wheels from six vehicles on his lot sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning. He says the thieves were fast, efficient and skilled.
"It looked like somebody very professional," he says. "Looked like they had a crew and knew what they were doing and the cars they were targeting. They were in and out of here very quickly."
Draeger says he is surprised such daring criminals would hit his business in Spring Lake.
"In the 20 years I've been here, we did have one other set of wheels and tires stolen," he recalls. "It was probably ten years ago. In a small town like this you don't really expect it."
To prevent future wheel and tire thefts, Draeger says he will install locking lug nuts, especially on the higher end models.
"When they got to a car that had the locking lug nut they passed right over it," he says. "Locking nuts on all of the cars probably would have prevented the problem."
The dealer says he thinks insurance will cover much of the loss, but he is still on the hook for the deductible.
"It wasn't as bad as someone breaking into your home," he says. "But it still hits home because they are stealing something from you.
