WHITEHALL, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police on the lakeshore hope thefts from car dealerships are over following three arrests. Wednesday morning, dozens of wheels were taken from cars and trucks at Don Rypma in Whitehall. On Monday wheels were stolen from cars at Draeger Motor Sales in Spring Lake.
Detectives believe the crimes were committed by the same people, and now three men are in custody.
Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler says someone driving on U.S. 31 spotted the thieves hard at work and called police. "We are grateful they called it in because that is what broke it open for us," says Roesler.
When police arrived three male suspects ran from the dealership, leaving behind evidence and an easy way for police to track one of them down.
The alleged get-a-way truck was registered to one of the suspects and was loaded with wheels and the cross-wrench police believe was used to get two dozen wheels off several luxury tucks, cars, and SUVs.
Police arrested two suspects walking a short distance from the dealership. A third suspect managed to elude police for several hours. Friday afternoon he too was located and taken to jail.
Now police are working to see if the men are responsible stealing tires outside of Muskegon County. "We are working with Ottawa County to get some search warrants for different locations," says Roesler.
