David Steiger, 19, is charged with first degree child abuse.
SPARTA, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Sparta man has been charged with abusing a 20-day-old infant.
Sparta Police say the baby boy was taken to the hospital with 19 broken bones, including his femur on June 30th. Police arrested David Joseph Steiger, 19, on July 3. He was formally charged with first degree child abuse in the case two days later.
Detectives are trying to determine what led to the baby's injuries. The infant's current condition is not known.
Police say Steiger is the only suspect in the incident and the child's mother is considered a witness in the case. A judge set Steiger's bond at $100,000 since he's a native of Georgia, making him a potential flight risk.
Steiger is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing July 17.
