GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A man accused of illegally selling fish online says he did it because he didn't have enough room in his refrigerator.

Tuesday, Leon Terrill Smith, 40, entered a guilty plea for trying to sell the catfish he caught in the Kalamazoo River without a commercial license. Officials with the Michigan DNR say sport fishing is not health regulate and the fish could be contaminated.

Smith had placed an ad on Craigslist then sold the catfish to undercover wildlife officers.

"I didn't know it was illegal, if I knew it was illegal I wouldn't have been trying to do it. I was just trying to get a couple of extra dollars for the fish that I had because I had too many," Smith told WZZM 13.

Smith claims he tried to get a commercial fishing license but was unable to obtain one of only 50 allowed in the state.

He was placed on probation for four months and required to participate in an educational series about fishing laws in Michigan.
