GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Sunday is the 100th birthday of President Gerald R. Ford. There are celebrations throughout the weekend to honor the Grand Rapids' favorite son.
The first was a birthday party this afternoon at the Gerald R. Ford international airport. Passengers had the chance to enjoy birthday cake and take part in family-friendly games.
"We're just honored to bear his name. You walk into this airport and it says the Gerald R Ford International Airport... There are statues in his honor and that's why we wanted to bring attention here today to let people know that this isn't just a Grand Rapids airport, it was named for a man that meant a lot to West Michigan," says Tara Hernandez, Ford Airport spokesperson.
Saturday, the tribute to Gerald Ford moves to the Ford Presidential Museum. There will be a lecture from President Ford's former Secretary of the Treasury.
Sunday, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the president's tomb, followed by the unveiling of a model of the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford in the Museum's lobby.
