SPARTA, Mich. (WZZM) - West Michigan is known as being a mecca for minor league sports. That includes some non-traditional sports, like the one that will be revving its engines this weekend in Sparta.

The 11th annual "Jim Keech Memorial Race" will take over Sparta Airport this Saturday and Sunday.

"We expect anywhere from 50 to 70 mowers to show up this weekend," said Jayson Mikula, who is a six-time champion on the United States Lawn Mower Racing circuit. "We have racers coming from all around the country, from as far away as Florida and Maryland."

Mikula added that the majority of the racers will be from the midwest states.

This event isn't just about trophies, bragging rights or the regional lawn mower points race. It's about something far more important.

"This is our annual race to benefit Huntington's Disease," said Mikula, who's family has raised more than $100,000 in hopes if finding a cure.

Racing runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, then wraps up Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $5 per person 12 and older.

Sparta Airport is located at 9100 Vinton Ave. in Sparta. For additional information about the event, here are a couple websites for you to check out:
