CALEDONIA, Mich. (WZZM) - Recently Grand Rapids was home to the International Herpes Virus Workshop and more than 500 researchers from across the globe met to discuss their findings.

One West Michigan woman has a very personal stake in the conference as she has dedicated her life to educating others about STDs and STIs.  She even quit her job as an accountant to do so.

Janelle Marie, founder and director of TheSTDProject.com, shares her story in the video link above.

The conference produced some controversial data, but the whole reason for the meeting is to share findings in hopes of finding a cure for the eight or nine different strains of Herpes, says Steve Triezenberg of the Van Andel Institute.

"Science is a frustrating business," says Triezenberg. "It's not for a lack of intelligence that there isn't a cure already. It's really curiosity that will one day lead to a cure - studying something no one else has thought of."

Triezenberg says the main thing holding researchers back from discovering a cure is the complicated nautre of human biology and the relatively simple models researchers use.
