RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)-- The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department is releasing the name of the man who drowned while fishing on Gull Lake.
Investigators say 34-year-old Evert Chong Tan and 30-year-old Mary Linh Nguyen were on the boat Saturday morning when its engine rapidly accelerated, throwing them into the water. A nearby fisherman and a lifeguard from the Gull Lake Yacht Club rescued Nguyen; however, they could not find Tan.
Dive teams finally recovered Tan's body about 200 yards off shore around 4 p.m. Saturday, nearly seven hours after the incident was first reported.
Neither passenger was wearing a life jacket.
