DETROIT (DETROIT FREE PRESS) - Miguel Cabrera was at it again today. So was starter Max Scherzer. And every Detroit Tigers batter recorded a hit.

That made for a good afternoon of baseball at Comerica Park, where the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 to win three of the five games in this weekend series.

The Tigers improve to 73-51 on the season while the Royals drop to 64-59, good for 8.5 games behind the division lead.

Cabrera, on the first pitch he saw from Royals starter Bruce Chen, hit a line-drive home run to left field for his 40th of the season, a 2-run shot in the first inning. He later added an RBI single in the third inning to finish with three RBIs.

Scherzer (18-1) pitched eight strong innings, giving up two runs, five hits and zero walks. He struck out four, the first time in 25 starts he didn't strike out five or more.

Torii Hunter had an RBI flyout in the fifth to make it 4-0. Then Brayan Pena's RBI double and Ramon Santiago's RBI single increased the Tigers' lead to 6-0 in the sixth.

The Royals scored two off Scherzer in the seventh on a Salvador Perez RBI groundout and an Emilio Bonifacio RBI double. Then Billy Butler hit a solo homer off Joaquin Benoit in the ninth.
