Grand Rapids, Mich. (WZZM) It's been about 3 years since the Michigan ban on smoking in bars and restaurants took effect.
Monday the state issued a clarification saying contrary to what many think, there is not an outright ban on smoking at those businesses.
Mike Saunders is a bar tender at The Meanwhile Bar in Grand Rapids, "The way I understand the law is being reinterpreted is anyplace where food and drink is being served you are not allowed to have smoking."
But under the clarification of the law, a bar could serve food and drink on a bar or patio some of the time, and at other times discontinue serving and permit smoking in that same area.
The smokers we talked to at the Meanwhile Bar like the idea, "There is nothing better than being able to sit out on a nice patio and have a cigarette and drink a beer at the same time."
The smokers we talked to feel as long as they are not disturbing other people, they should be allowed to smoke in an area and enjoy a beverage.
