GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- As 40,000 people walked the five mile stretch across the Mackinac Bridge Monday morning, thousands here in West Michigan had a bridge walk of their own.
The Grand Crossings Labor Day Bridge Walk kicked off at 8 a.m. at Ah-Nab-Awen Park. The walk had a new route this year and took participants across multiple downtown bridges.
Yvette Smith of Grand Rapids said Grand Crossings was perfect way to spend the Labor Day holiday. "My mother in law and I have done the bridge walk every year and we are here to keep the tradition going. I think it's a great event for the city to have. People go out have exercise and it's free."
As part of the tradition, Mayor George Heartwell led the walk Monday morning.
