GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Leaders in the local health industry are urging people to put in a little extra effort this week by taking the stairs whenever and wherever they can.
It's a week-long effort called "Take the Stairs Week" to promote healthy living. America now faces what health officials are calling an obesity epidemic, largely caused by inactivity.
Tuesday, local leaders gathered at the Grand Rapids Art Museum to announce the effort. They say using the stairs can be beneficial for three reasons: it saves energy, frees up space for strollers and wheelchairs, and it's an easy way to get in better shape.
Many businesses will be posting reminder signs by their elevators for the week. The GRAM is one of those locations.
