MASON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- Eric Knysz, the man accused of shooting Michigan State Trooper, Paul Butterfield, is facing four charges, including murder of a police officer, two weapons charges, and theft of a vehicle.

Meanwhile, his pregnant wife, Sarah, appeared in Mason County Court Wednesday to face separate charges.

Sarah Knysz' mother has come forward saying her daughter is also a victim in this case.

20-year old Sarah Knysz is six months pregnant, behind bars and is facing serious jail time. It is a fact her mother, Angel Burnham, struggles to accept.

"It is senseless, absolutely senseless," said Burnham.

We now know Eric Knysz had previous run-ins with the law. Police records show 19-year-old Knysz pleaded guilty to home invasion back in 2008. Four years later, he entered another guilty plea for driving while impaired and violating a license restriction. Then four months ago, came a guilty plea for domestic violence. His mother-in-law says she was unaware of his past but admits the family knew the couple had some problems.

"We are just now learning about his criminal background history. No one in the family knew about it prior. He has a history of domestic violence against her. We all know she was afraid of him and obviously afraid to leave him. Prayers go out to everyone involved. The friends the family the co-workers," she said.

Sarah Knysz has been charged with accessory after the fact and using a stolen vehicle.
