GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- When the fifth-annual ArtPrize competition opens next week, hundreds of thousands of pedestrians will roam through downtown Grand Rapids to see the more than 1,500 pieces in the competition.

Visitors will need to navigate a few obstacles and detours to reach some of the entries.

Grand Rapids is a city where construction and redevelopment is underway, and some sidewalks are blocked.

"Traffic safety does a really outstanding job," says ArtPrize marketing director Todd Herring. "We work with them closely throughout the year and they make sure the appropriate detours are set up so pedestrian traffic can flow safely through the city."

City staff and private contractors are working to remove as many barricades as possible before ArtPrize, but some projects won't be finished in time.

"It might be a little bit of a challenge with all the increase of people," offers pedestrian Jamee Bragg.

"It's one of those good problems to have," adds her husband, Jake Bragg. "When you have construction going on and you see everything being rebuilt."

The free ArtPrize app for Apple or Android devices has maps and other features to help people navigate to the venues where the art is displayed.

ArtPrize begins Wednesday, September 18.
