HASTINGS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A freshman football player for Ottawa Hills High School was seriously injured Thursday evening in a game at Hastings High School.

According to Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesperson, John Helmholdt, the player was knocked unconscious after a tackle.

He regained consciousness a few minutes later and was airlifted to a hospital.

Helmholdt said the student suffered an abdominal blow, not a head injury.
