New Aquinas Athletics Building
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) --- Aquinas College's two dozen athletic teams will soon have a new home.
College leaders and donors broke ground on the Alksnis Athletics and Recreation Building Wednesday morning. More than 450 student athletes attended the ceremony for the East Fulton Street facility. The 70,000 square-foot building will feature a NCAA certified track, wooden floor courts and practice areas. It's named after lead donor Greg Alksnis and his wife.
"I graduated from here in 1971 and I was one of the first graduates to use the old field. That field house now is over 40 years old and it's time for a new one. I'm so happy to be able to help other students enjoy their college experience," said Alksnis.
"It's... a dream come true," added coach Terry Bociam.
The athletics facility will also include a curtaining system so the building can be used by multiple groups, including community organizations.
"I'm really excited not only for everyone at Aquinas College, but for everyone in Grand Rapids," said Alksnis.
The Alksnis Athletics and Recreation Building is expected to open by the summer of 2014.
