GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The shutdown of the federal government is not affecting the WIC program in Kent County at this time.

The Kent County Health Department is reassuring clients that the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children has funding in place in Michigan until further notice.

The Michigan Department of Community Health states that by using 2013 "spend forward funding", and reallocation funds from the USDA, WIC should be able to cover food costs for four to five weeks.

Vendors are still able to accept WIC EBT (Bridge) cards until further notice.
