DETROIT (AP) - A resilient Detroit Tigers team has prevented the Oakland Athletics from closing out their American League Division Series in four games.

The Tigers erased deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 before Max Scherzer worked out of a bases-loaded jam to help the Tigers earn an 8-6 win that sends the series back to Oakland.

Jed Lowrie hit an RBI single and a two-run homer to put the A's ahead 3-0. Jhonny Peralta erased the Oakland lead with a three-run blast in the fifth, two innings before Victor Martinez slammed another game-tying, solo homer.

Detroit finally went ahead 5-4 on Austin Jackson's RBI single later in the seventh, but the lead looked precarious once the Athletics loaded the bases against Scherzer with nobody out in the eighth. Scherzer wiggled out of trouble by fanning the next two hitters before Alberto Callaspo lined out to center, ending the threat.

Scherzer replaced Tigers starter Doug Fister, who allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.

The Tigers tacked on three runs to take an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth, capped by Omar Infante's two-run double. The final rally became crucial once Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run single off Joaquin Benoit in the ninth. Benoit ended the game by fanning Seth Smith.

Detroit finished with 11 hits after collecting none off A's starter Dan Straily in the first four innings.

The deciding fifth game is slated for Thursday.
