GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-South Dakota has Mount Rushmore; now Grand Rapids has "Mount Trashmore."

Aquinas College students created Mount Trashmore Thursday by gathering one day's worth of campus garbage and dumping it in the Wege Plaza. A team of students then sorted through the trash to demonstrate what waste could have been composted or recycled.

"We think that by creating a visual statement, we can encage people in conversation, and through our conversation, we can educate," said Aquinas sophomore Cait Hilton.

Aquinas College's goal is to become "waste-free" by 2014. Visitors to Mount Trashmore Thursday were encouraged to join the effort by signing a sustainability pledge.
