HESPERIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Michigan farmers are expected to grow 30 million bushels of apple this year. But before those apple go into bags for the grocery store, they first are placed in apple boxes that are Made in Michigan.

The big apple crop is being harvested in fields around West Michigan, with workers picking apples by hand and placing them in apple boxes in the field.

Other than U-pick fields, Michigan apples will all spend time in an apple box. And more apples this year means there is a demand for more apple boxes made by WB Pallets, Inc.

WB Pallets in Hudsonville has built pallets for decades; now the company also builds apple boxes at a shop in Hesperia. When farmers started noticing their apple crop would be big this year, Jason Dils says they started placing orders for the boxes his company makes.

"This year we actually geared up and started a mill based on the demand," explained Dils. "Hopes were there and hopes manifested into orders."

The boxes are built using Michigan oak.

"If you build a good apple box it will last 50 years."

Demand for WB Pallets is also up thanks to growth in auto parts manufacturing.
