GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The dividing line between Grand Rapids and Wyoming turned into a flood zone around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Before long, Eastern Avenue near 36th Street was flooded over.
The water flowed for over an hour as workers strived to shut off the main valve. Crews quickly found a way to protect the nearby Rest Lawn cemetery.
A man who made a delivery in the area was surprised at how fast the area flooded.
"When we went in, the road was fine; when we came back out, it had just happened apparently because the concrete was all pushed up and water was just pouring out."
The water problem forced the closure of Vista Charter Academy.
After the work crews shut off the water, what remained on Eastern Avenue was a massive sinkhole that crumbled away through the day.
