HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Holland City Council's decision to not add the LGBT community to its anti-discrimination policy became an issue in at least one city commission race.

But it wasn't enough to unseat one of three incumbents challenged in Tuesday's election. Richard Burlingame ran on that issue trying to take the Third Ward from Brian Burch.  In the end, Burch won re-election 60% to Burlingame's 40%

In the Fifth Ward race, incumbent Todd Whiteman beat challenger Darlene DeWitt 77% to 23%.

Holland's first openly gay candidate, Donald Martin, lost to incumbent Nancy DeBoer, 32% to 68% in the City Council at large race.
