GRAND RAPIDS, (WZZM) - The Navy officially christened its newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, in front of 20,000 people Saturday. The Gerald R. Ford is the first new class of carrier for the U.S. Navy since the early 1970's.
The Ford won't officially be launched until 2016, but the exterior of the Ford is done, and the ship will soon be docked in the water. The ship replaces the carrier USS Enterprise.
WZZM 13's Lee Van Ameyde and Photojournalist Mike Powers have been covering this story all week from Newport News Virginia including Saturday's ceremony.
