BELMONT, Mich. (WZZM) - West Michigan's first real snowfall just happened to coincide with Cannonsburg Ski Area's first weekend of snow making.

That's a big change from last year.

"We did not open until after Christmas last year, it was warm it was muggy," said Cannonsburg Ski Area's media manager Alycia Choroszucha.

The ski hills were covered in puddles.

"It was pretty miserable for December," she said.

But November 23rd this year, temperatures were in the low 20s.

"It's really cold," said Dustin Denharder

That's prime conditions for snow, both from Mother Nature,  and to help Denharder's team run their snow guns.

"You mix air with water out of a nozzle, it freezes in the air and makes snow," he said.

"The  guns can cover an acre of a land with one foot of snow in an hour," he said.

Cannonsburg has more running this year, along with new staff and a brand-new run on the back hill.

"There is the start of the run. You snake around here, brings you all the way down to our triple chair," said Denharder.

The expansion isn't the only bonus to skiers; the weather is making for a possible Thanksgiving weekend on the slopes.

"Which is something we haven't seen in years and years," said Choroszucha.

She says opening a month early, and on a holiday weekend, could be a big financial boost.

"We're a small local business, we have a short season so we need all the days open that we can possibly get."

Cannonsburg will take any extra snow days as well.

"It's always nice to see natural snow flying," said Denharder.

Cannonsburg will announce its official opening date on its website on Monday.
