PORTAGE, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Portage police officer shot a man suspected in a stabbing Tuesday afternoon.

Around 12:45 p.m. officers were called to a report of a stabbing at Romence Rd. and Constitution Blvd. There they found a woman who said a man had just stabbed her and ran off.

Officers set up a perimeter and during a search, a plainclothes officer encountered the suspect, who was still armed with the knife. To stop the threat, the officer shot the suspect, police said.

The victim was taken to the hospital however his condition is not yet known. The original victim is also being treated at a local hospital. No names are being released yet.

Michigan State Police were called to investigate both the original stabbing and the officer-involved shooting.
