WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) - Michigan State University alumni and supporters in West Michigan are celebrating the Spartans' Rose Bowl victory over Stanford.

Grand Rapids businessman James Starr has one regret -- the team never went to the Rose Bowl during the four years he was on the MSU cheerleading squad.

"I was a cheerleader at Michigan State from 1991 to 1995," he explains. "They never got to the Rose Bowl. It was very sad, but we are there now."

Starr watched the game with a friend and their children from a table at the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Walker.

"I would totally love to be on the field right now," he laments. "But I've got friends with the team in Pasadena right now. We are texting back and forth and I'm there in spirit."

Starr and his entourage watched the game wearing white and green garments and face paint.

It was "high fives" all around when MSU nailed down the victory in the final few minutes.

"This is what I wanted to happen the entire time I was there," he says. "But I will take it whenever it comes. It's good for it to happen while I am young enough to enjoy it."
