GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- West Catholic High School hosted a purple community fundraiser for Van Andel Institute Friday night. The event was organized by the boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams.
The West Catholic teams wore commemorative purple jerseys for the game, which were then auctioned off. Students also sold purple t-shirts and hosted a glow stick ceremony to honor loved ones affected by cancer.
"Here at West, we all coach our youth league, so all the kids are here tonight in the student section with all us high school kids; it makes the atmosphere fun. Everyone around here has been affected by cancer in different ways, so everyone happy to come out and support," said Mason Theile.
100 percent of the funds raised go directly to research, with none of the money spent on operational or administrative costs.
