GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's never easy for schools to decide when to cancel classes for the day.

Superintendents have to take a number of factors into consideration before making the call. Usually it's based on visibility, and road conditions.

In Grand Rapids, if school starts, but conditions worsen, officials have a plan of action in place.

"I anticipate what we also will do is have teams on the streets testing things out," said GRPS spokesperson John Helmholdt. "Dean Transportation will already have busses out, but we have certain routes they will test out so that by noon tomorrow we are starting to see significant accumulation, and an impact on drivers and the ability to get through those side streets, that will impact our decision."
