SAN FRANCISCO (USA TODAY) Google's Gmail service went down briefly on Friday, an outage that rival Yahoo pounced on via Twitter.
Gmail users were told their accounts were temporarily unavailable when they tried to log in on Friday afternoon, Eastern U.S. time, and were told to try again in a few minutes.
The outage lasted less than an hour, enough time for many users to complain on Twitter. Yahoo jumped at an opportunity to highlight its competitor's slip, sending out several tweets saying "Gmail is temporarily unavailable."
Google+, the company's social network, also suffered an outage, although that did not trigger as many complaints. Google+ has struggled to compete with Facebook, while Gmail has grown to be a crucial communication tool for individuals and many businesses.
