BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - After an altercation early Saturday morning, a male student from Ferris State was shot in the arm. The bullet traveled to his abdomen. The victim was treated and released from Spectrum Hospital.
A short time after the shooting, Ferris State University sent out an emergency text message alerting students to a shooter still at large.
The vehicle used was located and the handgun was recovered. Search warrants were issued and a male suspect; Decory Demarco Downing of Mt. Clemens, MI, was located in a nearby apartment with the assistance of a tracking dog. A state emergency support team was activated to attempt to end the situation peacefully. A female, yet to be identified who exited the apartment first is considered a suspect but has yet to be charged and is still in custody. After the use of a canine unit and robot, the male suspect was also taken into custody.
Downing is not a student at Ferris State University. He will likely be arraigned tomorrow on a felony firearm charge and attempted murder.
UPDATE: 1:00 a.m. Mecosta County Deputies say they have arrested the man they believe is responsible for a shooting at an off campus apartment Saturday morning.
The suspect was arrested late Saturday night at an apartment on Ferris State's campus, and is in the Mecosta County Jail. Charges are expected to be filed in the next two days. Investigators say even though the suspect is in custody the shooting investigation will continue.
A woman was also taken into custody and investigators are questioning her. The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday at Venlo Place apartments in Big Rapids. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities have learned that the suspect in the shooting might be in an apartment in The Finch Court area. Police have the apartment contained and attempts are being made to contact the occupants.
Local police did take a female subject into custody and she is being questioned by the Mecosta County Sheriff's Department.
People are asked to avoid the area as law enforcement officials work toward a safe resolution to the situation.
Students in residence halls and apartments near the Finch Court area are asked to remain in the safety of their halls.
