A Hope College student will not get to enter his second year of school. Sam Meengs, 19, died last night in a car accident in Muskegon County. The accident happened shortly before midnight on Friday at the corner of Apple Avenue and Slocum in Moorland Township in Muskegon County. Police say Meengs went through the stop sign and was hit by a car. He died at the scene, while his girlfriend was airlifted to the hospital. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. It is believed that Meengs was heading north to his family's cottage at the time of the crash. Friends say Sam Meengs was a good person, a good friend and a great student. In fact, he held a spot on the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's honor roll and chaired a youth committee in Holland. Meengs was just getting ready to start his sophomore year at Hope, and also was preparing for his second year on their dive team. Meengs graduated from Zeeland East High School two years ago where he was also on the swim team. Funeral services for Meengs have not yet been announced, but Yntema Funeral Home in Zeeland will handle the arrangements. Tonight on WZZM 13 news at 11:00p.m., you'll hear from one of Sam's teammates who describes the kind of "gentlemen" he was outside of school.
