Battle Creek-area school admin on leave after alleged drinking, driving video

BATTLE CREEK - A Battle Creek Lakeview school administrator is on administrative leave after a video was posted online of him over the weekend.

Travis May, the dean of students at Battle Creek Lakeview Middle School, was placed on leave after school officials were notified of the video, said Wendy Meyer, executive assistant to the superintendent.

The video appears to show May and three others in a moving vehicle drinking alcohol.

"This weekend, concerns regarding a social media post involving a district administrator were brought to the district's attention," Meyer said Tuesday in a prepared statement. "While the event did not take place during work hours, the behaviors depicted do not meet the standard of professionalism expected of district leadership. The matter is under investigation following district policy."

Meyer said the district would not have further comment because the matter is considered a personnel issue.

May has been with the school district since September 2010.

Possession of open containers of alcohol in a vehicle is against the law, but Lt. James Coleman, Michigan State Police Post commander in Marshall, while not commenting on the specific incident, said any criminal case would involve a determination by an officer of what was consumed and where.

"To see that on a video clip, I don't know that a prosecutor would touch that," Coleman said.
