Catholic Charities getting ready for Let's Go to Bat for Kids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- It's one of the best nights of the year for families: Let's Go to Bat for Kids.

It's Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The annual softball showdown pits local members of the media against priests from the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

This is a much bigger event than just softball.

Ann Maring of Catholic Charities West Michigan, which organizes the event, said it's all about helping vulnerable kids and families.

"The proceeds from the game are going to go towards our foster care program, helping kids be in safe families and taken care of while their parents can't take care of them. Helping kids who are going to be...placed into adoptive homes and also preserving families who are together but need a little extra support. We try to make it as fun for families as possible. We honor foster families every year to recognize them for all the hard work that they do. We offer fun opportunities for the kids. We're going to have a bounce house this year. We're going to have a Lego brick building station. There will be donuts from Krispy Kreme. We try to do a lot of fun things for the kids to keep them involved and engaged and offer them opportunities they may not have had otherwise."
