Local firefighters rescue 4 ducklings from sewer drain

GRFD rescues ducklings from sewer drain

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The Grand Rapids Fire Department went above and beyond their typical call of duty to rescue 4 ducklings that had fallen into a sewer drain while attempting to cross the street on Wednesday.

According to a Facebook post in the We Are Westsiders group, the mother duck and her ducklings were trying to cross the road at the corner of 7th Street and Shawmut Court.

A number of drivers stopped to make sure the ducks were able to cross the street, however, in the process some of the ducklings fell into a nearby sewer drain. Some of the bystanders tried to get the ducklings out themselves, but were unsuccessful and called the fire station on the corner Leonard and Covell streets for help.

The firefighters removed the drain cover and some of the asphalt covering it before successfully rescuing the four ducklings that fell in. One of the ducks had a broken leg and was taken to the Blanford Nature Center to get checked out.

Hey! Who's cutting onions?!
