Kent Co death investigation

GAINES TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 4-year-old Kent County boy died due an apparent beating; an autopsy showed the child was suffering from several other injuries.

The autopsy, which was conducted in the hours after the boy's death Tuesday, June 13, reveals the manner of death of 4-year-old Giovanni Meijas as a homicide, according to a Kent County Sheriff's Department news release.

Meijas' cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma to the abdomen. The boy also had other older injuries on his body at various stages of healing, the release states.

Police on Wednesday report the suspect, believed to be Elis Nelson Ortiz based on jail records and neighbors who spoke with WZZM 13, still is in the Kent County jail. No one has yet to be charged in the case pending a review by the county's prosecutor office.

Arraignment is likely Thursday should charges be filed, the release states.
