Doors remain open at Urban Family Ministries after funeral shooting

Woman Injured in eastern Avenue SE Shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A 52-year-old woman remains in critical but stable condition after she was shot at a funeral reception in southeast Grand Rapids on Thursday night.

The event was for 21-year-old Juwan Boykin. Boykin was the man killed earlier this month at a party held inside a closed Grand Rapids business. On Thursday night, his family held a gathering inside the Urban Family Ministries center, on Friday the doors for that organization remained open.

"I heard a female scream and everybody was rushing trying to get in the building," Elijah Libbett with Urban Family Ministries said. Libbett was working the funeral reception for Juwan Boykin when the shots rang out.

"Everybody ran into the building and when we looked up, there was a female outside who had been shot," he said.

Grand Rapids Police say officers in the area heard roughly 20-30 gunshots before they were dispatched to the scene.

"The real sad part about it is, is that these kids are fighting and the mother got hurt. We're bringing it home and it makes no sense," Libbett said. "My condolences go out to the family, that's why we do it. You know, there was no place for them to gather and we opened our doors and we'll do it again. We do it because this is ministry. Somebody has to stop and say 'Hey we care', everybody turns their back, it gets worse.  If we save one then we did our job."

Grand Rapids police say they do not have a suspect description at this time. They are continuing to investigate.
