GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A Lakeview man who punched a state police trooper and led officers on a chase that ended near Lowell was sentenced Wednesday, Oct. 19, to jail and placed on probation for the July melee.
Ty Anthony Martin, 19, pleaded guilty in September to fleeing and eluding and a more serious charge of resisting an officer causing injury. He faced up to four years in prison.
Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Buth sentenced Martin to 60 days in jail with credit for 16 days already served.
The judge also placed him on probation for two years. Martin was sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which allows his record to be expunged if he completes probation without major missteps.
Martin assaulted the state police trooper during a July 21 traffic stop on East Beltline Avenue at Cascade Road SE. It happened after the trooper stopped a pickup Martin was driving for failing to display a valid registration plate.
Martin punched the trooper and fled in the pickup, leading to a 20-minute pursuit. Kent County deputies joined the chase, which ended when the truck entered a field off Morse Lake Avenue SE near I-96.
