Four people from Miami are facing fraud and identity theft charges in Michigan. Investigators say Daniel Perez, Lixandra Matos, Alex Santiesteban-Criado, and Yumgy Martinez-Orta used stolen credit card information to buy gift cards. The fraudulent purchases valued at more than $40,000 were made at six Michigan Sam's Club stores, including the one on 28th Street in Cascade Township.
They are linked to a fraud ring responsible for $300,000 in losses across several states. The investigation began in mid-June when Kent County deputies were called to a disturbance at the Motel 6 on 28th Street SE. They recovered stored value cards and a credit card reading device linked to the group.
Police are seeing more cases where stolen credit card information is being used to buy stored value cards from major retailers. In several recent cases, credit card information was retrieved using gas pump skimming devises.
