Grandmother convicted of leaving 2-year-old girl in unattended car

A judge found Karol Fitzgerald guilty of a misdemeanor charge Tuesday.

COMSTOCK PARK, MICH. - A woman who left her granddaughter in a hot car in the parking lot of a Comstock Park Walmart was sentenced to six months’ probation for the May incident.

Karol Fitzgerald, 72, was convicted Tuesday, Oct. 11, in a bench trial in front of 63rd District Court Judge Jeffrey O’Hara. She was charged with leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, a 93-day misdemeanor.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department responded to Walmart about 6 p.m. on May 21 after concerned shoppers reported the 2-year-old girl was alone and unresponsive in the car. Authorities estimate the girl was in the car for about 40 minutes.

Fitzgerald was shopping in Walmart at the time. Deputies had to force their way into the 2009 Dodge Challenger to get the girl, who was treated for heat exhaustion.

In addition to probation, the judge ordered Fitzgerald to take parenting/grand-parenting classes.
