GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- One person was found dead while firefighters worked to clear a home after it had caught fire.
Residents were able to escape safely but told firefighters at the scene one person might still be inside, Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said.
The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Madison Avenue.
Firefighters initially reported heavy smoke coming from the second floor. After speaking with residents, they began clearing the home when they discovered a body on the first floor apartment. It was badly burned, and police won't be able to identify the individual until dental records are obtained.
The fire does not appear suspicious, Dixon said.
At this time, the cause of death is under investigation.
