Shooting near GVSU brings assault with intent to murder charge

A 23-year-old man is in custody and accused of assault with attempt to murder following a shooting near GVSU's Allendale campus.

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 23-year-old man is in police custody and accused of assault with attempt to murder following a shooting near Grand Valley State University's Allendale campus.

The suspect, whose name has not been released pending court arraignment, was arrested this weekend following the shooting early Saturday, Oct. 1, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. 

He is charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Police say the suspect knows the victim, a 28-year-old Grand Rapids man.

An update Sunday reveals the victim continues to recover in a Grand Rapids hospital.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Michigan Drive Apartments near North Campus and Lake Michigan drives. Police found the victim, suffering from gunshot wounds, in the parking lot upon arrival. The victim is not a ternate of the apartments nor is he a student at GVSU.

Two suspects were arrested in the hours after the shooting.
