Man arrested in Grand Rapids traffic stop was close to finishing sentence

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - One of two men found in a bullet-riddled car during a weekend traffic stop in downtown Grand Rapids was just weeks away from finishing a federal sentence.

Anthony Sprague was sentenced to a year in prison for violating terms of his release for a 2009 weapons offense and a 2014 escape.

His time under federal supervision was to end in late November.

Sprague was arrested Saturday, Oct. 29, after a motorist reported someone in a silver BMW pointed a gun at him on the freeway exit ramp. Police found two guns in the car.

Officers were looking for the car as part of an investigation into two shootings in the Black Hills neighborhood.

No one was injured in any of the incidents.

A third suspect believed to be involved in the weekend shootings has not been arrested.
