Michigan prisoner briefly escapes, ends up hospitalized

A prisoner escaped from an incarceration facility by climbing the fence. He was found a short time later.

CHELSEA, MICH. - Matthew Aires Genther, 37, escaped from the Special Alternative Incarceration Facility in Chelsea on Saturday, Dec. 16 around 3:08 p.m.

He escaped by climbing the fence. Once the facility discovered that Genther was missing, they contacted local law enforcement.

Michigan State Police found him in an empty home near the prison. Genther was found with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, and he was transported to a local hospital.

The 37-year-old was in the facility for violating his probation, and he was sentenced to a 90-day program at the Special Alternative Incarceration facility. Genther would have completed his sentence by mid-January.

The Special Alternative Incarceration program uses military-style exercise and cognitive-based programming in a structured environment.
