GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The mother of a 4-year-old boy killed last week has been arraigned on a domestic violence charge.
Sonja Michelle Hernandez' arrest is not related to the death of 4-year-old Giovanni Meijas. Instead, the 29 year old is charged with assaulting a man early Sunday, June 18, at a home on Oriole Avenue SW.
She was released from jail after her arraignment. She will return to court next week.
Prosecutors allege Meijas died at the hands of Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves; he last week was arraigned on felony murder and first-degree child abuse charges. Ortiz-Nieves is Hernandez' boyfriend but not the father of Meijas.
He had been living with Hernandez for about six months.
Police say Ortiz-Nieves was left alone to watch seven children, all under the age of 11, the day Meijas died. An autopsy revealed Meijas' cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
Two of the children were Ortiz-Nieves' -- four were his girlfriend's and one was a relative. All of them have been removed from the home by Children’s Protective Services.
