Plea entered in February crash that killed elderly Grand Rapids woman

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A man involved in a fatal February crash that killed an elderly woman on the city’s Northeast Side pleaded guilty Monday, Nov. 7, to reckless driving causing death.

Travis Kazmierski, 24, entered the plea in Kent County Circuit Court the day his trial was to get underway.

Under a plea agreement, the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office will recommend that he spend no more than a year in the Kent County Jail. Reckless driving causing death is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Police say Kazmierski was heading west on Michigan Street NE at Briar Lane about 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle collided with a car driven by 86-year-old Bette Taber. Her vehicle was struck when she pulled onto Michigan Street.

She died at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital following the Feb. 1 accident. Kazmierski will return to court for sentencing on Dec. 22.
