Police release additional body cam video after 11-year-old was handcuffed

Police footage of handcuffing girl

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Grand Rapids police have released additional body cam video after an 11-year-old girl was handcuffed while police were investigating a stabbing.

Around 8 minutes of video was released by the police department in response to Freedom of Information Act requests from WZZM and other media outlets. Chief of Police David Rahinsky said he hoped the video would give the public a more clear understanding of the events that took place the night of December 6, 2017.

"It's very important for us to be transparent. We have heard from the community regarding this issue and we are very sensitive to share what we can, when we can, Rahinsky said.  He continued and called the situation very dynamic.

"Each situation is specific. Each situation is unique. So this footage will provide a little more context to this situation and provide a little more detail," he said.

Police already released some video from that day which shows the 11-year-old girl screaming, "No, please" as officers place handcuffs on her. One officer can be heard saying, "You're fine. You're not going to jail or anything."

The incident happened on Dec. 6 on Hamilton Ave.  According to police, the girl was handcuffed for two minutes. Then the cuffs were removed and she was detained in the back of a police cruiser for 10 minutes with the other women.  After this incident, a complaint was filed on behalf of the 11-year-old with the GRPD who then opened an internal investigation.

Grand Rapids Police say the 11 year old girl left a house along with two adult women who fit the description of the suspect they were looking for at the time.
