MSP releases dash cam video from deadly police chase

KENTWOOD, MICH. - Dash cam video from a Michigan State Police cruiser shows the chase for a 16-year-old suspect, ultimately ending in a crash that killed a Calvin College student.

Video of the Saturday, March 11, was made available following a Freedom of Information request made by WZZM 13.

A trooper pursued the car police say was driven by 16-year-old Alex Torrez for six miles before the crash at Broadmoor Avenue and 52nd Street. The video recorded from the cruiser's dash cam shows the initial traffic stop off U.S 131 after the trooper reported the clocked the car traveling at 90 mph.

The car initially stopped but then sped away. 

Police say Torres was all over the road and at one point swerved and pulled back in front of the squad car. It went through several red lights.

There were some points during the chase Torres sped more than 100 mph during the pursuit. 

The chase ended at the Broadmoor intersection when the speeding vehicle crashed into a car driven by 21-year-old Tara Oskam. She was killed in the crash.

David Torrez, a passenger in the pursuit vehicle, also was killed.

Investigators say Alex Torrez had alcohol, marijuana and other controlled substances in his body. He was 16 years old at the time of the crash and did not have a driver's license. He since has turned 17 years old and will face prosecution as an adult.
