Police: Man who tried to abduct woman arrested

ADA TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A man who police say tried to abduct a woman is sitting in the Kent County Jail.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 6:45 a.m. the Kent County Sheriff's Department was called to the 6000 block of Adaway Court SE regarding the attempted abduction, according to a news release.

The 911 caller said an armed man, identified as Simon John Hatley, 52, tried to force a woman into a vehicle. The female victim got free and fled. The suspect is believed to be the estranged husband to the victim, and officers found him a short time later riding a bike. 

The suspect had an airsoft gun on his person at the time of his arrest as well as a backpack with other items of interest. Hatley is of the Grand Rapids area, and his case is being arraigned at the 63rd District Court.

He is currently in custody at Kent County Correctional Facility. 

He is being lodged with multiple charges, including:

  • armed robbery of a person, felony (life offense)
  • assault with intent to commit a felony of unlawful imprisonment, felony (10-year offense)
  • aggravated stalking, felony (five-year offense)
  • weapons offense/felony firearm, felony (two-year offense)
