Teen arrested for fatal shooting at Grand Rapids house party

A Grand Rapids teenager is being charged with open murder.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A Grand Rapids teen with an extensive juvenile record has been charged with the March shooting death of a young woman at a Grand Rapids house party.

The suspect, identified through court records as 16-year-old Cleo Malik Nelson, is scheduled to be arraigned in Grand Rapids District Court Thursday, June 22 on a count of open murder.

He is accused in the March 20 shooting death of 18-year-old Kiara Carter. It happened about 7 p.m. at a home on Kalamazoo Avenue south of Franklin Street SE.

Carter died from a gunshot wound to the head. Police say up to 15 people were attending a party when the shooting occurred.

Nelson has a delinquency review hearing also scheduled for Thursday on numerous charges dating back to 2014, including larceny, aggravated assault and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
